Sault Ste Marie and area Smelt Fishing

SMELTS ARE IN! Only a couple days ago the smelts were running on St Joseph Island in Gowas Bay and I was talking with a friend last night and he said that the smelts are in at Harmony River. So you know what that means? You’ll be able find them at Stokely Creek, Chippewa River and any other favorite smeltin hole around Sault Ste Marie and area.

Fishing for Smelts in the Sault Ste Marie and area should bring you good results and you can always count on a good time.

Remember, it’s still cold this time of year, so dress warm and if you can bring hip waders or chest waders to keep yourself dry. Tie up any holes in your smelt net and get ready for dipping them smelts in your pails!

A dip net and a couple 5 gallon pails is all you need. Smelt fishing always seemed to be a social thing when you get out. Lots of people dipping their net and of course the tedious task of cleaning them.

I will add more info as I get it as to when smelts are running in Sault Ste Marie and area…

Prime locations to go smelt fishing

Around Wawa the Michipicoten River is a rugged spot for smelt runs since it’s a big river and is fairly hard to fish. Other smaller and more accessible rivers and creeks such as Wawa Creek, are definitely more popular for smelt fishing. If your going to be heading south from Wawa, you can certainly take a stab at dipping into the Old Woman, Agawa Rivers and Speckled Trout Creek but its been known for some time that these spots have had some bad runs the last few years. The one great thing about these fishing spots is they are easily accessible from Hwy. 17 from trails leading to their mouths.

If your coming formĀ  Sault Ste. Marie you can visit Jones Creek, Harmony River, Stokely Creek, and Chippewa River which again are all accessible for smelt fishing from Hwy. 17 and by walking trails or a trip down the bush roads.

Thanks
