Lakeview Hotel – Wawa, Ontario, Canada
My Fishing News -- March 2008 -- Lakeview Hotel -- Wawa, Ontario
This trip and news article centers around Wawa, Ontario, it’s annual Wawa Ice Fishing Derby, and our hosts at Wawa’s “best kept secret” for accomodations, the Lakeview Hotel.
The Lakeview Hotel, it’s owners Bonnie and Larry, along with family and staff members, Connie, Woody, Jay, and the rest, are running the best kept hotel secret in Wawa, Ontario. They have recently re-modeled their rooms in their hotel, an historical hotel, I might add, that is based right in the heart of downtown Wawa, close to everything, and with a beautiful view of Wawa Lake, and that is not all. They have four licensed rooms, featuring “The Pit” nightclub downstairs, Woody’s Pub on the main floor as well as their Dining room. Jacuzzi suites for romantic getaways, single and double re-modeled rooms, cable, telephones, computer conmpatibility, are all available and all affordable in the heart of Northern Ontario Outdoors.
Wawa, Ontario is a spectacular two and a half hour drive north On Highway 17 out of Sault Ste. Marie, our home base for FishingNorthernOntario.com. Again, I am accompanied by my Web Coordinator, Mitch Larouche, as we head up to check out the newly re-modeled Lakeview Hotel and the Annual Wawa Ice Fishing Derby. The day is sunny and the drive along the north-eastern shore of Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world, is incredible! The lake is open out towards the horizon, it rarely freezes over entirely, the ice glistens in the sun, the blue sky, what a drive!
We arrive at the Lakeview and are welcomed and checked in by Larry, one of the owners, and we head to our rooms. They are both amazing. The job done re-modeling this historic hotel has paid off. the rooms have well placed colour TVs, cable ready, with new furnishings, wall coverings, wall hangings, refrigerators, newly re-modeled bathrooms, well done with complimentary soap/shampoo dispensers and coffee. Brand new porcelain fixtures shine on new floors in the bathroom. The TV, not only has a remote, but so does the ample ceiling fan, a first for us.
WAWA FISHING DERBY ON WAWA LAKE
We head downstairs for some lunch and then out to the derby. Lunch at Woody’s pub is great, with Edna, our waitress, who did not disappoint us on her recommendations for what we should have.
After checking out the derby headquarters, we head out on the ice to fish for a little while. After little luck, which means no luck fishing, we decide to head in, but, after all we are here to cover the events, not win them! We then head back to our rooms to relax, clean up, change, and head to the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby Dinner/Dance, with our tickets compliments of the Wawa Ice Fishing Derby committee. The event at the Wawa Community Arena is full to capacity with a great meal served, fine music, an open bar, vendor booths, and last but not least, a chance to view the $100,000.00+ prize inventory. We check out the “Standings” board to see the leaders, and head back to the Lakeview to socialize with the owners and check out the nightlife in Wawa, Ontario.
Upon our return to the Lakeview we meet up with Bonnie and Larry in Woody’s Pub, and from there we headed down to “The Pit” nightclub and I thought I was in Toronto!. The place was full to capacity with great music, lots of dancing, and a lot of ice-fishermen,( to be politically correct, ice fishers or ice anglers, since I met a lot of women fishing for the prizes). The club is well appointed, lots of seating and features a selection of music, that rivals many large urban centers. The place “rocks” until 2 am Fridays and Saturdays and other nights depending on business and season.
We would like to thank everyone at the Lakeview Hotel for our stay and hopeful return. The accomodations are truly “affordable luxury”, it is a slogan they use, but in this case it is true. Stay there and you will not be disappointed. Remember that this is an adult hotel, with a bar in the basement, open late. The rooms are quiet, but it is not ideally suited for children. Adults seeking a getaway with entertainment, commercial travellers, anglers and hunters, derby participants are all welcome and you will find no better location for fun, food and fishing in Wawa, Ontario.
Remember to Practice Safe and Friendly Fishing,
Kraig Edwards
